GMC
GMC is the popular brand name used to market vans, trucks, and sports utility vehicles in United States and Canada. General Motors Truck Company, or GMC, is one of General Motors' most popular divisions. The vehicles that GMC produce have traditionally found a successful market with truck buyers and people looking for a larger vehicle with more power than other cars. Formed out of the GMC buyout of the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company in 1909, GMC quickly became one of the best selling brands in the North American market.
With truck models like the K Series and the Sprint, and van models such as the Vandura and the Handi-Van, GMC had a stranglehold on the truck and van market share. More recently, GMC has seen a higher number of SUVs sales due to popular models like the Envoy, Yukon, and Acadia. GMC has split the models developed by General Motors with their cousin brand Chevrolet.
The similarities between the brands are subtle, but General Motors quickly developed what would be GMC's place in the relationship. The vehicles produced by GMC come with different options and allow for more customization than the Chevrolet counterparts which are a stripped down version of the GMC brand. Due to these differences, the GMC brand attracts a more particular customer, while the Chevrolet brand is more of a broad marketing name.
The GMC brand faced some trouble when General Motors was crippled by financial problems. General Motors had a possible plan to get rid of the GMC brand along with the Pontiac brand in order to help it restructure and make it through the financial troubles. General Motors then decided to keep the GMC brand and drop Pontiac because of the importance of GMC as a brand name couldn't be replaced by any other brand. GMC will no doubt continue to be a popular brand in the future and help the parent company General Motors pull through tough times.
